Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) Family Tradition

Hi all, it's been awhile since I update my blogspot. In this post, I would like to share about my childhood memory of Mid-Autumn Festival, which we have been through it yesterday on 1st October 2020.

Mid-Autumn Festival also called moon festival or mooncake festival, it's held on the 15th day of 8th month (Chinese calendar) and in this year it fell on 1st October 2020 (world calendar). Traditionally they believed that on this date, the moon will be the brightest and fullest size. But to be frank, I notice that the 16th, the full moon will be most brightest and you can see some sillhouette on it.

My family used to celebrate this every year, but since we start to go to collage, we rarely celebrate it anymore. Mid-Autumn Festival is actully one of my favourite day beside Christmas. This festival engraved deeply in my childhood memory and I would like to share how we celebrated it in the past.

1. Making Lantern or Shop Your Favourite Lantern Character
At school, we made a lantern, decoreated it and have it hanged on the wall or hold it under the moon. There are many ways you can make a lantern with, using paper plate as the base or using an angpao (but it will not be pretty to walk around with it).

In the first year of celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival in HongKong, I haven't had my own lantern, so we shopped for a lantern that can light up and I choose a Hello Kitty holding her little Teddy lantern.

2. Having Mooncake or Doll Mooncake (ApekKong)
We always buy Mooncake or ApekKong in this festival up until now. Even though the tradition of celebrating is gone, mooncake will still needed in this time.

Red Lotus MoonCake

I loved mooncake and it's delicious as you only can eat this once a year (Just kidding, you can buy it even if it's not mid-autumn fest). My favourite is the yolk mooncake, this year I didn't get yolk mooncake because it's sold out. But I get to buy a lot of doll mooncake which we called it ApekKong! ApekKong taste like soft cookies when it is freshly from the oven, when you put it in a week or two it will ne harden and that is the best time to eat it. It has different kind of shape, such as gun, fish, the deity (ApekKong), pig and other new shape. And it's Yummy.

3. Whole Family Hot-Pot Dinner
One best thing in every celebration is always get together and have some food. And Hot-Pot Dinner is basically the best, joining by your whole big family. We could talked and laugh until you finish your food. Then we share mooncake together.

4. Walking Together Under The Moon
In Hong Kong, all the people always going to the bay to watch the moon and having a fireworks there. This is when we walk together, holding lantern with the light on. It is an awesome expirience, although all we do is only walking in the sea of people. And I got to taste brown sugar art, where I need to spin a wheel to determine the shape I'm going to get. That time the wheel only has 12 Chinese zodiac on them, but I think now they add more of shape on to it.

5. The Story of Chang'e And Superstition
It's a legend that my dad used to tell at this event and I even have a story book of it. Moreover, we all know her as the goddess of the Moon, and i believed you know the story of it. There are superstitions as well, we must not point at the moon or get upset at our parent under the moon. If you happen to do that, your ears will bleed. Well it sounds like made up by my parents, but it really did happen to me many times haha. When I consciously or not point at the moon, my ears will have this small scab after another second. So each time I realized I just pointed at the moon, I should have my hand join together to apologize to the moon then I don't get any scab if I do that. It happen many times in my teenage year,  until I'm an adult and never point at the moon again.

So, this is my story of how I celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival in my childhood. Because it's an awesome time for me, I had made some art to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival that you can have it on your t-shirt and some other merchandise. I know the festival is already pass, but you can have it for next year! Every merchandise is ON SALE now, so don't forget to check it out!

The Empress Of China - 武媚娘传奇 review

The Empress Of China Cover
Hi everyone, I'm going to review a Chinese drama series 'The Empress Of China' or '武媚娘传奇' with total 82 episodes and Fan Bing Bing as Wu Mei Niang / Wu Ze Tian

The story is set in Tang Dynasty, the story begins with Wu Ru Yi who later became Wu Mei Niang, she first came into the palace as a lowly ranked concubine and later became the first and only woman Emperor who rules in China. This series, mostly tells about her love life with Emperor Taizong and Emperor Gaozong, who are father and son respectively.

The drama taken main event of Wu Mei Niang's life. At first she was a concubine of Emperor Tai Zong, after the death of the emperor, she was banished to be a nun. Then she was brought back to the palace by Emperor Gao Zong, previous emperor son, and become Emperor Gao Zong's queen. She went through the power struggle and declared herself as an Emperor, after Gao Zong's death.

I will recommend this series for those who love a romantic drama with historical settings.
| SPOILER ALERT : Sad ending might occur in the first love story. |

And I will not recommend this drama for those who love historical so much and love about how clever, cunning, and cruel Wu Mei Niang can be to be able to get the throne. This drama makes Wu Mei Niang seem like a nice person who is in luck to be able to be the emperor. Well, I can't say 100% nice, because she order to kill 2 people (Princess GaoYang and Ming Yue) but with a reason that her act can be comprehended.

The cast of 'The Empress Of China' are way too awesome and very pretty. I give an applause and appreciation for Fan Bing Bing as Wu Mei Niang and Zhang Feng Yi as Li Shi Min (Emperor Taizong) for their great acting skills. Well,, the other is good as well.

With her stunning act and awesome face, she really made this drama series looks elegant and worth watching. I love how she transforms, from a naive maiden into a strong women. I like Zhang Feng Yi as well, his demeanor as king look very cool rather than when Aarif Rahman resumed the throne.

Media state that they made 260 costumes for Fan BingBing alone to play as Wu Mei Niang and all of them are very stunning and gorgeous. With Fan BingBing wears it, IT IS PERFECT!!! Couldn't find another word for it. (Other cast has a great outfit as well, but I will highlight only on what Fan BingBing wears.) There are some of the outfits she wears only once or only for the cover shoot and some she wear it repeatedly but only for a short time.

Some of amazing costume I like from the drama

Gao Zong's Queen when she is governing behind
the royal beads
When she becomes the emperor
I love how the makeup artist does Fan BingBing makeup, as she grew to be a tough woman she wear more makeup. And the accessories she wears shows her knowledge grew as well.

After all, this is a cool drama series. Worth watching with absolutely stunning traditional dresses. In the end, I find out most of dynasty series drama shows that ('The Empress of China' as well), when you become the emperor you will lost all the people you love (friends, ally and lover). No one else will be with you when you are at the top because they die either protecting you or because they need to be dead for you to be the emperor.

Lastly, I love the eunuch, Rui An, who follow Wu Mei Niang from her start until the end. Love his loyalty towards her. (One of the reason I love historical is because the loyalty of the subordinate.)

Rui An reunited with Mei Niang
He's been waiting for Mei Niang even though
he doesn't know she's alive or not

Let me share with you how do I state the historical series is good, when:

1. If the story has a King, the one who play the King has to be good in showing their demeanor as a King.

2. Background settings. Does it look fake? Some of the historical series using CGI for their background settings and it really irritates with solid color that doesn't match the outfit. (Won't name one, but there is one historical Cdrama using CGI for their background.)

3. What their wearing, traditional clothing of course. How stunning and outrageous they are.

4. And of course the cast itself. Even though he or she is famous but the acting skill is bad, it will make the entire series collapse.

5. The storyline of the series. Some historical drama series will bring you bored to death.

This is the end of my review for 'The Empress Of China'. Feel free to comment and please be kind. Thank you. Have a blessed weekend.
